Therapy
For
men DHT (a by-product of testosterone) causes the formation of the typical male baldness. This process can be prevented with Finasterid. Finasterid is a product , that prevents the transformation of testosterone into DHT and is taken orally as a pill.
The patient has to be patient though, as the first results will not be visible untill after 6 months, and the full effect one year after beginning the therapy. In most patients further hair loss is stopped. In some patients Finasterid can even lead to regrowth of fallen hair.
The product Minoxidil was introduced as a blood pressure medication cure in the 70's. It was observed that in patients who had been treated with Minoxidil, increased hair growth occurred. Subsequently it was possible to prove in clinical studies that the application of a solution containing Minoxidil twice a day lead to a decrease in hair loss.
For
women hair loss is usually treated with an oestrogen solution, locally applied on the scalp. Satisfying results can be obtained with local Minoxidil therapy. When the local therapy fails, birth control pills are prescribed, after consulting a gynaecologist.
With food supplementaries
Coffee, tea and alcohol stimulate the cardiovascular system, nutrients are discharged at a higher rate. To avoid interferance with your body's digestion of essential minerals you should reduce the consumption of coffee, tea and alcohol.
Pay attention to getting a balanced diet, containing a high proportion of amino acids(the basis of proteins) and vitamins of the entire B-group. Should the patient suffer of a sever vitamin or mineral deficiency - something that should almost never happen with a balanced diet - a regimen of highly dosed vitamins may improve the state of his or her hair health. Regulary physical activity improves the metabolism, thus helps to spread nutrients through the entire body.
Artificial hairpieces
Toupee
Already existing baldness can be disguised with hairpieces and full wigs, which unfortunately are still quite expensive.
Hair weaving
Hair weaving consists of having a hairpiece woven into existing hair. But as hair grows an average of 1cm per month, the hairpiece has to be reattached every 4 weeks.
Hair transplantation
Since the introduction of hair transplantation about 1 million transplantations have been carried out.
This method has passed the experimental stage and is today common practice in operative dermatology.
The most common form of hair transplantation is the mini- and micro graft technique. A micro graft contains 1-2 hairs with a diameter of 0,7 to 0,9mm, a mini graft contains 3-5 hairs with a diameter of 1,0 to 1,2mm.
Hair transplantation by an experienced team can achieve up to 1500 mini-and micro grafts per session and cover even bigger baldness in 2-3 sessions. The application of mini- and micro grafts is suited to androgenetic alopecia, innate alopecia and scaring alopecia, as well as eye brow reconstruction.

Cosmetic hair care products themselves cannot cause further hair growth or slow down actual hair loss, but they do make the hair seem more neat and voluminous. After chemical treatments (dyeing, colouring) or after excessive sun exposure a rebuilding hair conditioner or poulticing should always be applied.
